I love smoothies. Yes, I try to get most of my nutrients from my meals, but sometimes I'm in a rush or need some assistance hitting my macros (usually the protein). Smoothies are a quick and easy way to get in some nutrition.
When say I like smoothies, I mean one made with real fruits and vegetables, and a high quality protein powder. Not some expensive, chemical-laden shake that the internet says is the answer to all your prayers.
Hint- your body doesn't need chemicals to "detox", and your nutrition should come from food. If you're looking for a quick fix, or a justification for binge-eating on the weekend, you may need to re-evaluate your attitude toward food & your body.
But enough of that rant. You don't need me to tell you that your smoothie ingredient list shouldn't read like a 10th grade chemistry book.
As for my smoothies I love to experiment with different combinations of fruit, veggies, and flavors in my smoothies. I prefer to keep my fruit limited to one small serving (i.e.- a green apple, half a banana, a cup of berries). I also make sure my protein powder has around 20 grams per serving. I've used any number of green veggies, cauliflower, and even sweet potato in my smoothies for balance. Here's one of my favorites- it takes just a few minutes to whip up!
Fall Apple Crisp Smoothie
1 granny smith apple, chopped & cored
1 cup milk or nut milk of choice
1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
2 cups greens of choice (spinach, kale, etc.)
1 teaspoon Maca Powder (optional)
1 teaspoon Spirullina (optional)
Cinnamon, to taste
Place all ingredients in a blender, and combine until smooth.
Top with additional cinnamon as you desire. Drink & enjoy!
- Two of my favorite protein powders are this one, which is paleo, & this Vegan protein powder.
- I steam my greens & veggies before adding them to my smoothies. I usually buy a large bunch, prep, steam, and freeze them in this ice cube tray ahead of time.
- I add maca & spirullina to my smoothies. Both ingredients are optional. Be warned, spirullina makes all smoothies a nice shade of green, regardless of other ingredients!
- Feel free to add whatever add-ins you like. Chia and hemp would be great, too.
